  1. What is a Keyword in SEO?
  2. What is keyword research?
  3. What are long tail keywords?
  4. keyword research for beginners
  5. Keyword Competition Analysis

1. What is a Keyword in SEO?

A keyword is particularly a term people use to search anything in the search engines. Indeed, we cannot define the keyword exactly. Sometimes, it appears in the form of a complete query that anyone can understand easily. On the other hand, it can have only one or two words.

For example:

Someone searches for ‘keyword research step by step guide’ in the Google. This phrase is showing the exact intent of the user. At the same time, if someone puts a phrase such as ‘Keyword research’, then you cannot exactly define what the user wants.

In simple words, a keyword is a phrase that a user puts in the search engine to take knowledge regarding his or her interest.

2. What is keyword research?

Have you ever thought – what is keyword research?

I am sure you would have thought of it a lot if you are in the internet marketing industry.

In the SEO perspective, keyword research is a process to find out the relevant keyword for your blog or website. If you got a business website, then the better keyword research improves conversions and enhances the online business opportunities.

Indeed, keyword research is searching of low competition and high search volume keywords.

We will further discuss this part in this post. By which you would get to know the right method of keyword research and competition analysis.

3. What are long tail keywords?

Long tail keyword is a phrase consist more than two words, such as “keyword research tips”. It is a long tail keyword. They are different from the generic keywords (e.g. SEO, WordPress) which usually contain only one or two words.

Long tail keywords are very convenient to focus on the targeted audience. The Neil Patel in a guest post on SearchEngineJournal says

“Long tail keywords consist of more than four keywords are useful to concentrate on the site’s SEO.”

If you are targeting for genetic keywords, it would be the hardest task for you. Generally, the high domain authority sites like Dell, Moz are already ranking for them. So it is going to be really very hard to you.

On the other hand, the long tail keywords will able to get more impressions and click to your site from the search engines.

You can use some free tools to find long tail keywords. I had compiled a list of such free tools in my previous post. I am sharing the link below:

 4. keyword research for beginners

As I earlier said Keyword research is an essential part of the Search engine optimization.

Many people know about this term- ‘keyword research’, but do not know how to do it in the right way.

They just open the keyword planner, fill a couple of terms in the search, and select few keywords of their mean.

Meanwhile, they skip a crucial step.

Keyword competition analysis.

You could see many bloggers targeting the keywords which are almost impossible to rank.

Instead, if they will make more efforts to find low competition keywords, then it will easier to rank for them.

If you can contribute more 20 minutes, then a keyword can be analyzed for the competitiveness.

Most new marketers and bloggers feel difficulty in finding the low competition keyword.

I will show you in the next point how to find easy keywords in your niche.

Pro Tip: You shouldn’t ignore the keyword analysis process. Conduct a keyword competitive research. It will surely reduce your efforts to rank a keyword.

Now, we move forward to ‘keyword research for beginners’.

Just go to Google keyword planner and type few terms related to your topic.

Select the Country and set the date range to months (recommended to see close results) and click on ‘Get Ideas’ button.

Click on Keyword Ideas and scroll down the page to see more results.

I have seen many niches got saturated and marketers do not get the relevant keywords. In this situation, Google auto-suggestion becomes handy to you. It will also help in getting long  tail keywords.

After having the relevant keywords, we need to analysis the competition for these keywords.

5. Keyword Competition Analysis

Install the Moz Chrome Extension and activate it just by clicking on the ‘M’ icon until it turns into blue color.

activate mozbar

Now do the analysis for a keyword. You will see some data below each link in Google SERP.

Keyword competition analysis-1

You will see DA, PA, and Links at the Mozbar.

Page Authority (PA):  According to Moz, PA is a score to predict how well a page will rank in the search engines. Read here more about the Page authority.

Domain Authority (DA): It’s a score to predict how well a site will rank in the search engines. Learn more here.

Link: These are backlinks pointing to a particular webpage.

Look at this Seo metrics carefully. It will let you decide about the competitiveness of a keyword.

Keyword competition analysis-2

There are multiple links with low SEO metrics that shows that this keyword is a low competitive.

To confirm it, we have to analyze the on-page optimization which incorporates the following things:

  • Title
  • URL
  • Meta Description

You have to discriminate the links which are targeting or not targeting the exact match of our keyword “homeopathic medicine for piles” in three of these areas.

Keyword competition analysis-3

When we compare top 5 results, we find that no any post is completely optimized for our keyword.

However, the work does not end up. You need to visit top ten results and analyze the content.

You would have to come up with unique and quality content having more length than the top searches have.

Here you should not take the wrong meaning of the lengthy article. You article will only include the information related to the topic. Unwanted fillers and irrelevant information can reduce the interest of readers from your content.

So, now we got a low competition and high search volume that can get us a huge organic traffic from search engines.

The SEO metrics and on-site factors are in our favor.

You can analyze the rest of the keyword in the same way.

After the keyword competition analysis, begin to write an epic article around the keywords and ask your friends and authority bloggers to share it on their social media profiles.

I think you would also love to know about the proper on-page optimization and off page techniques to promote your content. You can learn both of these things from the following posts:

I hope you liked the post. Please share it in your friends’ network and circulate in social media so that others can read this juicy Keyword Research Step By Step Guide.

  • Hi Nikhil,
I recognise matters are continually evolving but definitely I’m with you on this one, I might find it difficult to trust weblog keyword research is a dying artwork.
I assume it’s miles such an essential part of having a blog. that is how I see it.
    A blog is like this:
here is an extension of me and that I would love to speak about it. anyone up for a talk?
Of path, there is so much more to a weblog, but every now and then I suppose that a blog is extra approximately interacting with people on a private degree thru remarks.
I’m able to certain be one of those people who will not be phasing out the problem of keyword research. I really like Keyword research and commenting on other’s blogs and I really like it while human beings comment on my posts.
individually I assume that there may be constantly going to be a foundation to the entirety this is old fashioned so one can never die. for example, when you bake a cake you usually need eggs, flour, milk and sugar. They will be the fundamentals. nowadays some humans are into Paleo diet in order that they might use gluten free merchandise, lol. The factor I’m seeking to make is that if you take away the elements then there’s no cake.-YOU cannot get rid of THE humans OR THERE may be NO interplay.
It’s definitely difficult to see that this form of communique can be non-existent. it may evolve but I have noticed that regularly we riot again to our old approaches. true old style service. You just can’t beat it. And extra than ever earlier than I am seeing organisations and huge businesses turn out to be more one on one, with personal interaction.
from time to time I assume human beings are searching out efficiency or quick-reducing, but at the give up of the day, we are humans. There are constantly humans on the other quit and people are feeling beings that like to interact. That’s how I sense besides.
Thank you for sharing this post. blogging and posting are not virtually understood with the aid of the average person and but from ‘developing your enterprise’ point of view is a have to examine.
    Cheers, Aabharan

  • Hi Nikhil!

A very detailed step by step guide on keyword research! I is very effective to go for long tail keywords to get top rank on the search results easily. While going for broad match keyword, it takes time to get expected results. It is good strategy to out rank your competitor by targeting long tail keyword.

And, for checking competitiveness of a keyword, Moz bar works greatly!

However, thanks for sharing an useful post!

  • Hi Nikhil,

  • Hello, Nikhil, what an article you had written. Researching for good keywords is tough. For a new blogger, it is very important to concentrate on keyword research and SEO. Your guide is definitely going to help.

  • Nikhil,
This is an excellent step-by-step guide to keyword research. One thing that is also helpful is to do a site specific search with your keyword ( keyword)and make sure that Google understands that the page you are trying to rank for is actually the most relevant page on your site for that term. Also, grab the Moz metrics for your own site so that you can compare them to those keywords you are researching. Keyword difficulty is directly related to your own site strength. A difficult keyword for some is an easy keyword for others, based on their domain strength. Thanks for the great post!

  • Hi Nikhil, I have been trying to get a clear idea of keywords for a while. All other articles only give a technical explanation. Several articles on keyword research are technical and complex.  My mind blows after reading a few paragraphs. I believe it takes a smart person to describe complex processes in its simplest terms. Other writers may take pride in their writing capacities.  But yet, many readers get lost trying to figure out what they are saying. I will definitely share this article.

Also check out this article for ahrefs blog. It’s also written with beginners in mind. It also includes actual examples and a free reusable checklist for keyword research. Do check it out. Thanks.
